“This is the most powerful console we’ve ever made”

The PS5 Pro is now a fast-approaching reality. The $700 mid-generation upgrade arrives on November 7, approximately a year in advance of the game that will likely push the four-years-old base PS5 to its very limits: Grand Theft Auto 6. But how essential will the PS5 Pro be to enjoying GTA 6 at its very best?

After months of rumors, Sony has finally confirmed the worst-kept secret in gaming, the PS5 is getting a major upgrade this holiday season.

How well will the PS5 Pro sell ?

From the reactions we’ve seen to the PS5 Pro’s $700 price tag, it would be easy to think Sony’s new console is dead on arrival. But, as our own Chris Dring pointed out yesterday, the price isn’t the biggest issue facing the new hardware launch, and for all the uproar over the expense, there is still a market for PlayStation’s high-end device.

After the PS5 Pro was announced, in which he suggests 1.3 million units could be sold by the end of 2024 slightly behind the 1.7 million the PS4 Pro shifted during its own launch window.

And though the PS5 often makes you choose between performance and fidelity modes in many games, you still get a decent gaming experience regardless.

Fidelity mode mostly does a great job hitting 4K resolution to bring you sharper visuals

The PS5 Pro is real and it’s arriving soon. This mid-gen refresh console promises to enhance the best PS5 games with faster performance and sharper visuals.

It looks like someone got a hold of marketing material for PS5 Pro, revealing its price, editions, and release date.

Next up, it’s an upgrade to the console’s Ray Tracing abilities, allowing rays to be cast at double, sometimes even triple, the speed of the regular PS5 console. Finally, the PS5 Pro utilizes AI-Drive Upscaling (known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) to provide sharper images and improve overall image detail

Will PS5 Pro Run GTA 6 at 4K60 ?

PS5 Pro Probably Won’t Be Powerful Enough To Run GTA 6 At 4K60

“I think there’s good evidence to suggest that the [GTA 6 trailer from last year] was running on either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X,” says Richard Leadbetter,

“The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps,” he explains. “This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.”

GTA 6 could realistically run at 60 frames-per-second on the PS5 Pro, Leadbetter is blunt in his analysis: “No. Grand Theft Auto games have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard, which is why every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!).

“The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5 and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps,” he explains. “This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.”

GTA 6 may only reach 30fps on PS5 Pro.

PS5 Pro’s other enhancements, GTA 6 will undoubtedly look better on the new console. It just likely will not be the 4K 60fps experience many will be expecting following Sony’s boastful presentation

Digital Foundry admits that “all bets are off” in the unlikely event Rockstar is aiming for 4K60 on the standard PS5; however, they add that “What you will get will be higher quality visuals, but likely still running at similar frame-rates [to the base console],” and that “If GTA 6 can’t sustain a locked 30fps, PS5 Pro can run the CPU with a 10 percent bump to clock speeds – so you may get more stable performance.”

PS5 PRO Specs and Hardware

Bigger GPU, 4K and 60fps, lots of ray tracing

PlayStation 5 Pro with upgraded GPU and AI image upscaling

Considering this is likely a hardware accelerated solution, it should provide better results than the mediocre software-based AMD FSR technology that PS5 games used and should be on par with DLSS from Nvidia or XeSS from Intel

  • Upgraded GPU: The PS5 Pro comes with a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5. This results in up to 45% faster rendering, providing much smoother gameplay.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: The console features even more powerful ray tracing capabilities, enabling more dynamic reflections and refraction of light. Ray tracing on the PS5 Pro can cast rays at double or triple the speed of the original PS5, resulting in more lifelike visual effects.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: A new feature, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, uses AI-driven upscaling technology. This machine learning-based approach significantly enhances image clarity by adding a remarkable level of detail, offering super-sharp visuals that elevate the realism of in-game environments.

All games confirmed for PS5 Pro enhancement

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra says the PlayStation 5 Pro is aimed at those who already have a PlayStation 5 and are trading in or selling it to make it easier to buy a new console

“Pro models or any upgrade in a generation, refers to an upgrade for existing users. “So when teams are evaluating costs, they don’t want to lose money on every console because that puts pressure on other parts of the business, and they’re thinking about how they can increase player value,” explains Ybarra.

„This is the base model used by Sony. It won’t suit everyone, but it’s all part of a broader go-to-market plan.”

Big problem wih price, people are not happy

Talking of Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards, PC gaming has been the much-debated topic following Sony’s reveal of the PS5 Pro’s eye-watering $699.99 price tag.

$700 the PS5 Pro is expensive for a console, but I spent more than double that on my GPU alone

You Can Build a PC Equivalent to the PS5 Pro, Here’s How

PS5 Pro is already expensive, but having one of the best gaming PCs is useful for more than just video games

CPU If you do want to save a bit of money, however, you can easily opt for a Ryzen 5 processor

GPU What I ended up with was a GPU built on the same RDNA 2 architecture, but with 60 compute units – which is exactly what the AMD Radeon RX 6800 is.

RAM Picking the right RAM to go into the system is a bit tricky, mostly because the PS5 shares memory between the CPU and GPU – something that typically doesn’t happen in a gaming PC with a discrete graphics card. However, you do need a good amount of memory to make your system work smoothly, and right now 16GB is about the minimum I’d recommend for a modern gaming rig.

Motherboard There are a lot of really nice motherboards that are packed with shiny features that most people will probably never use. You can absolutely go for something fancy, but you’ll easily spend double or triple what the MSI B550M Pro WiFi will cost you.

Storage PCIe 4.0 drive, which you can get with up to 2TB of storage at a pretty decent price

Power Supply Make sure the Power Supply you’re getting has an 80 Plus Bronze rating or better, so you know it’s at least a bit efficient. The Thermaltake Toughpower GX2 fits the bill, and I’m going with a 600W

Case Micro ATX cases out there that are not much larger than the PS5 itself. The Cooler Master N200 is a tiny little PC case with an unassuming aesthetic and enough space to fit even a high-end graphics card

Is It Worth It?

All together, this system will set you back about $863, which is more expensive than the $699 PS5 Pro. But you really do get more for your money with this gaming PC, even if all you want to do is play games on the thing. Not only do most PS5 games come to PC these days, but you also get access to pretty much any game on the Xbox Series X. A gaming PC inherently has a bigger library of games than any console on the planet.
